What Putnam County Homeowners Pay for Tree Work

Putnam County is the most heavily wooded county in our coverage area. Drive through Kent, Putnam Valley, or Philipstown and the canopy closes in over the road. Properties here routinely have 30, 50, even 100+ trees. Many homes were built in wooded clearings where the forest is 20 feet from the foundation.

That means more tree work per property than anywhere else we cover. It also means more storm damage, more driveway blockages, and more emergency calls when ice or wind takes down the big oaks and hickories that dominate the landscape.

We list 41 tree service companies in Putnam County. Some Westchester-based companies also serve southern Putnam, particularly the Mahopac and Carmel areas. Here's what the work costs.

How Costs Vary Across Putnam

Putnam is mostly rural and wooded throughout, but there are differences between the towns.

Carmel and Mahopac are the most suburban parts of the county. Properties are a half-acre to one acre, with established trees but more open yards than the eastern and western parts of the county. These areas are also closest to Westchester, so you can tap into the larger pool of Westchester-based tree companies for competitive pricing.

Brewster and Southeast are in the eastern part of the county along Route 22 and I-84. The terrain is hilly and properties tend to be heavily wooded. Equipment access is generally good because of wider roads and flatter building sites in the village areas. Costs are average for the county.

Kent and Patterson are the most rural areas. Long unpaved driveways, steep terrain, and dense forest cover make these the most expensive areas for tree work. Some properties are down a quarter-mile dirt road where a large bucket truck can barely fit. That access difficulty adds 10 to 20% to the cost. Kent borders the Connecticut line, so some CT-based tree companies also bid work here.

Putnam Valley and Philipstown border the Hudson Highlands. The terrain is steep and rocky. Properties in these towns often have trees growing out of rock ledges, which makes stump grinding impossible and removal more complicated. These towns also get more ice storm damage than the rest of the county because of their elevation.

Tree Removal Rules in Putnam County

Important

Putnam County towns generally have lighter tree regulations than Westchester, but there are rules to know.

- Carmel: Contact the Building Department at (845) 628-1500 for trees near wetlands or watercourses. - Kent: Wetland setback regulations may apply. Contact the Planning Board at (845) 225-6783. - Putnam Valley: Conservation Advisory Council reviews work near wetlands and steep slopes. Contact (845) 526-3292. - Philipstown: Philipstown has some of the stricter environmental regulations in the county due to Hudson Highlands proximity. Contact the Building Department at (845) 265-5202. - Southeast/Brewster: Contact the Building Department at (845) 279-4600.

Most routine tree removal on private property in Putnam doesn't require a permit. The main exceptions are trees near wetlands, watercourses, or steep slopes (over 25% grade) where erosion is a concern. If you're clearing more than a few trees for a new driveway or building site, you'll likely need site plan approval.

What Makes Putnam Different

Putnam's tree challenges are different from the more suburban counties.

Properties have more trees. A typical Putnam lot of 1 to 5 acres might have 50 to 200 trees. Homeowners here don't just deal with one problem tree. They deal with ongoing forest management. Annual maintenance budgets of $1,500 to $4,000 are common for properties in Kent, Patterson, and Putnam Valley.

Well and septic systems add complications. Every Putnam home is on a private well and septic system. Tree roots are the number one cause of septic system failure, and large trees near the well head can contaminate the water supply if roots crack the well casing. Any tree within 50 feet of a septic leach field or well should be monitored.

Power outages are frequent. NYSEG serves most of the county, and overhead power lines through wooded areas take damage several times per year. Extended outages of 2 to 4 days happen after every major storm. This makes proactive tree removal near power lines particularly important. NYSEG trims within their right-of-way, but anything on your side of the meter is your responsibility. Contact NYSEG at 1-800-572-1131 for trees near their lines.

Deer are everywhere. This matters because deer browse on young trees and prevent natural regeneration. If you remove a large tree and want something to grow in its place, you'll need a deer fence or tree guard around the replacement planting.

The Bottom Line

Key Takeaway

Most Putnam County homeowners pay $600 to $2,800 for tree removal, $175 to $1,100 for pruning, and $100 to $400 for stump grinding. Emergency work costs $700 to $3,500 or more. Per-tree costs are lower than Westchester, but total annual spend is often higher because properties have more trees.

With 41 tree service companies in the county (plus some Westchester companies that serve the southern towns), scheduling is manageable but tighter than in larger counties. Book routine work in winter for the best rates and fastest scheduling. For properties with 20+ trees, consider an annual maintenance contract with a local arborist. It's cheaper than dealing with emergencies one at a time.
